A firmer massage using deeper pressure and a variety of techniques, including stretching, to break down scar tissue, release pain, improve flexibility, help prevent injury and reduce muscle tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders, which can be caused by bad posture or stress and overuse of muscles.

Deep tissue massage is used to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.  The purpose is to “unstick” the fibres of the muscle while releasing deeply held patterns of tension, removing toxins, while relaxing and soothing the muscle.  It is both corrective and therapeutic.

As deep tissue work is generally focused on problematic areas, it is possible at certain points during the massage that the client may experience some discomfort or pain.  It is important to let the therapist know if the pain is outside your comfort range.

There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage as it helps reduce any inflammation.
